Regatta Report:

On day one, light & fluky winds and a rolling swell made some stomachs uneasy, and left the heavier sailors praying to the wind gods. On the Sunday the sun came out, but the sea breeze everyone was hoping for never materialised.  Conditions were challenging for the Race Committee and they did very well to get all 6 races in over the two days. If Although Saturday was meant to be the first day of summer, it really felt like it on the sweltering Sunday, with plenty of sailors enjoying swimming at the club after a hot afternoon of sailing!

Nelson sailors acquitted themselves very well across the fleets. In the 18 boat Laser Radial fleet, Burty Meffan sneaked onto the podium, edging his older brother Max into fourth. They were also 1st and 2nd Youths. Hannah Mangin was second youth female behind Naval Point YC’s Sally Hill. The Radial fleet was fiercely competitive, with Vauxhall YC’s Peter Graham coming through on the second day to win the South Island Championship title ahead of the ‘Grand Master’ Hamish Atkinson from Naval Point YC. The Laser Radial is the lightweight version of the Laser, with the same hull but a smaller rig. Both versions are current Olympic classes.

NYC’s Mike Terry won the Laser Standard Class with a perfect scorecard of 6 1st places. An impressive feat that was matched by NYC’s young Noah Malpot in the Open Optimist class, where he defended his regional title from the Queen Charlotte YC sailor Louie Poletti, with local Ben Roff in third.

In the Starling class, Ben Mangin (on his 16th birthday) pushed Charteris Bay YC’s Antonia Hill all the way, but couldn’t quite keep her behind him in the light winds – he’ll be hoping to take revenge at the Starling South Island Championships at Naval Point YC next weekend! NYC’s Georgia Schokking was also competing hard at the front of the fleet, and was pretty chuffed with her third place in the challenging light wind conditions.

The all-Nelson Europe and Flying Dutchman classes were won by Rob Bentley (Europe) and Bruce Lissant-Clayton & Callum Foley-Logan (FD). Both these classes now look towards bigger regattas next year, with the Europe Nationals forming part of the club’s annual Whakatu Regatta over the 11th-13th January, and the FD Nationals and World Championships in mid-February.

Nelson Yacht Club offers a massive thank you to everyone who helped make the regatta a success, from club members & volunteers, to the sponsors of an awesome selection of prizes, the competitors who travelled and especially to the large contingent of Queen Charlotte Yacht Club parents and volunteers who came over with support boats and helped on the water.
