Regatta summary:

Final results for the Nelson Marlborough Regional Championship 2020 at Nelson Yacht Club 2020

The stronger sailors enjoyed some fantastic top-end conditions in the bay on Sunday with a booming sea breeze building up some decent waves. There were definitely plenty of sailors pushing their comfort zones and a few swims, rescues and breakages to keep the support boats interested. A long course for the first race was enough to finish almost everyone off… with only 5 boats surviving to compete in the second race of the day, before calling it a wrap. After three tough races in winds gusting up to 30kts on Saturday, I’m sure most people were a little tired and sore… awesome effort from everyone!

In the 420’s Hannah Wilks and Austin Candlish completed 4 wins from 4. Well done to Alexandra Thom (Splash) and Emily Preece (Optimist) for completing the race on Sunday in conditions that would be a bit different from the Sounds! In the Starlings, Max Edwards (QCYC) took out the win, beating Finn Stichbury (QCYC) in 2nd, and Mitchell Brents (CBYC) in 3rd. Luis Schneider and Macgregor Jones were flying in their 29er to beat John Bailey and Bill Dabbs (2nd) in the Flying Dutchman.

In the competitive Laser Radial fleet, Jack Bennett (QCYC) completed 4 from 4 to win, with Harry Edwards (QCYC) edging out Justin Fletcher (NYC) and Emily Overend (QCYC) for a hotly contested 2nd place – there was only 1 point between each.

The Europes saw some good racing for their South Island Championship, with Mike Terry (NYC) hopping across to a Europe from his normal Laser Standard and taking out the trophy. It was a good battle between him and Tim Fraser-Harris until Tim out-did Mike in the rudder problems department, snapping the tiller clean off the stock.

It was of course disappointing for so many sailors to be kept ashore by the conditions as evidenced by the number of DNCs, but it was good to see people respecting the elements and making good decisions. It was certainly boat breaking weather!

Green Fleet

The Green Fleet squeezed away 3 races before lunch and 2 afterwards before the breeze got too strong. NYC’s Sean Bailey and Brooke Mundy were 3rd and 2nd respectively, with QCYC’s Ossian Ewart taking out the win.

Thanks

Huge thanks to all the volunteers involved in organising and running the regatta and especially the support boat crews out in some testing conditions. A massive thank you to the Queen Charlotte crew for coming over and being so supportive. Thanks also to Burnsco for their continued support of the local yachting, boating and watersports scene.
